Over the Moon provides dog training and behavior modification methods that are enjoyable for everyone, making games out of basic, good manners and creating life-long bonds between you and your dog.

Being stuck at home has changed everyone’s routines, including your pets’, who may be exhibiting behaviors that are negatively impacting your life. Over the Moon can help you find solutions – activities that can help stave off those behaviors like inappropriate chewing and incessant barking that can stem from boredom and/or diminished opportunities for socialization.

Every dog and cat is unique with a one-of-a-kind personality, and our private training sessions offer the personalized attention you can’t get from attending a class. We tailor our training to your needs and your pet, using only humane, effective methods backed by science.

Is your dog a gentleman at home but a beast in public? Is your puppy chewing everything in sight? Is your resident cat unhappy with a new addition to the family? We can help with these and other situations.

At Over the Moon we believe that the best, most effective training results happen when the clients and their pets are most comfortable and able to focus on the learning experience. We also know that smaller successes build to larger successes and as your human/dog team improves, we add personalized challenges that we know you can overcome.

Over the Moon now provides private training sessions virtually, as well as in person!

The Over the Moon Private Training Experience

Step 1. Determine Your Needs

Our first step together is a complementary 15-minute phone conversation where you tell me about your pet, the troubles you’re having, and your goals for your pet’s training. Next, we discuss how Over the Moon can help you, and we almost always give some quick tips that can change your dog’s behaviors immediately. When necessary, we offer suggestions for better management of the problem until we have a chance to meet. And of course, we schedule the initial, one-on-one consultation.

Step 2. Initial One-on-One Consultation

After our phone conversation, you will be sent a link to complete our behavior assessment/intake form for your pet. Our first visit together occurs where your dog is most comfortable (usually at-home) and can learn fastest. Depending on recommendations from our initial phone conversation we may meet either virtually, using a simple virtual meeting app, or in-person. During this ninety-minute session we will discuss your answers to the intake questionnaire, and we will assess your pet’s behaviors, his living spaces, and interactions with others in order to tailor his training for the most impact. Further, we will get started with training that will help you see a marked improvement in your pet’s behavior right away.

By the end of our first session together, we will have outlined a continuing training plan and you will have been provided some skills to help you continue what we’ve started.

The fee for the initial assessment and training plan advice is $150, but if you choose to purchase the 4-Session Training Package, the price of this assessment is included.

Typical Training Plans

Because Over the Moon Training is individualized to you and your pet’s lifestyle, our training plans are also tailored to fit you and your pet’s needs. At the end of our first session together we MIGHT recommend one or more of the following:

4-Session Private Training Package: $500

For most dogs who need help with specific behavioral issues, Over the Moon recommends our 4-session training package. This program works well for pets who have behavioral issues (for example, separation anxiety, inappropriate marking or eliminating, scratching and chewing, reactivity to strangers (both dogs and people), inter-family conflicts (dog-dog or dog-cat or cat-cat, etc.), biting, resource guarding, escaping, jumping on people, incessant barking, etc.).

This exclusive program includes four hours of in-person or live on-line training with a certified dog trainer addressing your dog’s specific behaviors.

A discounted rate for first responders, veterans and educators is available.

A La Carte Private Training Sessions: $150/hr

Dog Walking

Some dogs benefit from 30-minute walking/training sessions where we practice your dog’s skills out in the real world, so to speak. These walks are great for young, high-energy, and/or reactive dogs. Prices for this service are dependent on travel distances and start at $25/walk.

Our Methods

We use rewards-based training, backed by the most current animal behavioral science. Because we continuously study animal behavior and motivations, we are more adept at using natural rewards (treats, toys, praise, petting) to get the fastest training results. So far, we haven’t encountered a training situation in which it was necessary to use punitive tools and training methods, which can further exacerbate behavioral issues and cause other complications.

Rewards-based training is endorsed by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Tufts Animal Behavior Clinic, humane societies nationwide, and countless expert dog trainers and behaviorists.

A Tip From Laurie

Instead of serving your dog’s food to him in a bowl, play hide-and-seek with pieces of your dog’s food.  Start by ‘hiding’ it in plain site, sprinkling it on the floor, and gradually advance to making him find it under his mussed-up dog blankets, etc. This is a great mental exercise for your dog that could help save your sanity on a rainy day!
